How to Create Your Own Nameservers in WHM

This guide shows you how to configure custom nameservers in WHM. You’ll select the nameserver software, configure your nameserver names and IP addresses, and register them with your domain registrar.

Prerequisites / Requirements

  • Access to WHM.

  • A domain to use for your nameservers.

  • At least two IP addresses for your nameservers.

  • Access to your domain registrar to register the nameservers.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Select Nameserver Software

In WHM:

  1. Open Nameserver Selection.

  2. Select Bind.

2. Open Basic Setup

Go to:

Server Configuration → Basic cPanel & WHM Setup

Scroll to the bottom of the page until you reach the Nameservers section.

You must configure at least two nameservers, unless you previously selected Disabled.

3. Configure Your Nameservers

Enter the names you want to use for your nameservers.

Nameservers should follow this format:

prefix.yourdomain.com

For example:

  • ns1.yourdomain.com

  • ns2.yourdomain.com

Keep the following in mind:

  • Use a unique name for each nameserver.

  • ns1 and ns2 are commonly used.

  • Choose names that are easy for your customers to recognize and enter manually.

4. Assign IP Addresses

Assign an IP address to each nameserver.

For best practice:

  • Use a different IP address for each nameserver.

  • Make sure the domain used for your nameservers has an account in WHM.

5. Register Your Nameservers with Your Registrar

After configuring the nameservers in WHM, you must register them with your domain registrar.

Important: Registering nameservers is not done in WHM or cPanel.

If your domain is registered with Miss Hosting, contact our support team for assistance.

Troubleshooting / FAQs

Can I use only one nameserver?

At least two nameservers should be configured unless you have specifically selected the disabled option.

Where do I register my nameservers?

Nameservers must be registered with your domain registrar, not in WHM or cPanel.

Summary / Next Steps

Your custom nameservers are now configured in WHM. After you register them with your domain registrar, they can be used for your domains and will become available across the internet.
