This guide explains how to troubleshoot common PrivateVPN connection issues on macOS, including connection failures and app launch errors.

Prerequisites

  • A Mac with the PrivateVPN app installed.

  • Access to your Mac account and its password for system settings changes.

  • Access to Terminal for the helper tool troubleshooting steps.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Restart the PrivateVPN App

  1. Click the PrivateVPN icon in the menu bar and select Quit.

  2. Open PrivateVPN from the Applications folder.

  3. Click the ON/OFF button to reconnect.

2. Connect Using a Different VPN Protocol

  1. Open the PrivateVPN app and click Advanced View.

  2. In the Dashboard menu, click Connection Type.

  3. Select OpenVPN (TUN+TCP+443).

  4. Click Connect Now to reconnect.

Tip: If this doesn't resolve the issue, try selecting L2TP as the connection type.

3. Send the Connection Logs to Support

If you're still experiencing connection issues, send your recent connection logs to the support team so they can investigate the problem.

  1. Open the PrivateVPN app and click Advanced View.

  2. Select Settings from the left menu.

  3. Click Click to open logs folder. A new window will open.

  4. Find the recent log files and email them to [email protected], including a brief description of the issue.

  1. Click the PrivateVPN icon in the menu bar and select Quit.

  2. Open Launchpad and select Other.

  3. Open Terminal.

  4. Enter the following command:

    softwareupdate --install-rosetta

  5. Press A, then press Enter.

  6. Wait for the installation to complete, then close Terminal.

  7. Open PrivateVPN from the Applications folder.

  • If the connection still fails, send the recent connection logs to support.

  • When prompted for a password in system settings, use your Mac account password, not your VPN password.

Summary / Next Steps
