SAFE VPN - Windows Troubleshooting Guide

When your PrivateVPN app won't connect, try these solutions:

Install/Repair Option

Step 1

Open PrivateVPN app then click on Advanced View.


Step 2

Go to Settings on the left menu and then click on Install/Repair.


If you have User Account Control enabled, click Yes.


Step 3

Click OK.


Step 4

Go back to Simple View and then click the ON/OFF button to reconnect.


Connect using a different VPN Protocol

Step 1

Proceed to PrivateVPN app then click on Advanced View.


Step 2

At the Dashboard menu, click on Connection Type and then select OpenVPN (TUN+TCP+443). Additionally, you can select OpenVPN (TUN+UDP+1194) for faster connections or change encryption to AES-128-GCM for optimized connectivity.


Step 3

Click Connect Now button to reconnect.


*If the above fix did not work for you, try L2TP Connection Type. Alternatively, you may disable StealthVPN and reconfigure OpenVPN with the suggested encryption options such as AES-128-GCM.


Reinstall PrivateVPN app

Step 1

Download and run the latest version of the installer file from here: https://privatevpn.com/client/privatevpn-win-new.exe To perform a clean reinstall, uninstall the existing app via Windows' Apps & Features, restart your computer, and then proceed with the download and installation steps.


If you have User Account Control enabled, click on Yes.


Step 2

Click on Repair.


Wait for the repair process to complete..


Step 3

Reopen PrivateVPN app and then retry to connect.


Connection Log

If you are still experiencing connection issues with PrivateVPN app, send us the connection log for us to quickly identify the problem and send you the right solution.

Step 1

Go to PrivateVPN app and then click on Advanced view.


Step 2

Select Settings on the left menu and then click on Click to open logs folder. A new window with the log folder will open.


Step 3

Send a copy of the recent log files to our email address at [email protected] with your thoughts.

Android Troubleshooting

  1. Open the PrivateVPN app and navigate to VPN Settings.

  2. Set protocol to OpenVPN TCP 443 and disable StealthVPN.

  3. Select another server near your location if the current one is unavailable.


iOS Troubleshooting

  1. Open the PrivateVPN iOS app and navigate to VPN Settings.

  2. Choose OpenVPN Encryption > AES-128-CBC.

  3. Set VPN Protocol > OpenVPN TCP 443.

  4. Disable StealthVPN for enhanced reliability on restricted networks.

  5. Re-attempt the connection.
