🛡️ Monarx – FAQ

Monarx is an advanced security service that protects your website from malware and hacker attacks. Here we answer common questions about how Monarx works and how it can help you keep your website clean and secure.

✅ Can you use Monarx together with other security services?

Yes! It is common to use multiple security services in layers (so-called "layered protection"). We recommend that you do a comparative test – Monarx is extremely resource-efficient and runs in the cloud, unlike many others that are heavy and run locally. Monarx also provides fewer false positives and faster protection.

🦠 What is malware and how does it work?

  • How does a website get infected?

  • The most common causes of infection are:

  • Weak passwords

  • Outdated extensions or themes

Malicious code is often uploaded via vulnerabilities in old plugins or through insufficiently protected user accounts.

Do infections come back?

Yes, it is very common for infections to reoccur if the environment is not secured. Monarx continues to automatically clean up malware as it appears – often without you even noticing.

🔍 How Monarx classifies malicious files

Monarx uses several different classifications to determine how files are handled:

🟥 Malicious

  • The entire file is dangerous

  • We move the file to quarantine to protect the website

🟨 Compromised

  • Only part of the file is infected

  • Monarx removes the malicious part and leaves clean code

🟦 Suspicious

  • Unsafe classification

  • Requires manual review - no action is taken until we are sure

⚪ PUA - Potentially Unwanted Application

  • E.g. tools like Adminer or certain htaccess files

  • We do not take automatic action but you can set your own rules

📦 ZIP files

Monarx does not open ZIP files during scanning. Only if the ZIP file is known to be malicious is it removed. When files are unpacked, they are classified and handled individually.

What does it mean when a file is “cleaned”?

In this case, Monarx has removed malicious code from a file but kept the original clean code – so the website continues to function as it should.

What happens to quarantined files?

They are moved to a separate quarantine directory on the server (can be set). We do not change the file’s permissions.

What does “inactive” mean in the Monarx dashboard?

“Inactive” = the file has been removed from the server. After 3 months, it is also removed from view in the Monarx interface. You can filter to show only active threats.
